MESTA Project
Galicia and Castile and León · Dairy cattle

About the project
The MESTA project brings together seven dairy farms in Burgos, León, Zamora, Palencia, Lugo and A Coruña. Since January 2024, the daily ration has included an additive of plant essential oils intended to reduce the methane cows produce when digesting feed (enteric fermentation). Unlike the agricultural projects in the catalogue, its main effect is to reduce emissions against its reference year; the carbon stored in the soil is a minor part of its balance.
